The Policy team of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner plays a key role in this fast growing, dynamic independent Crown Entity, with a kaupapa of promoting and protecting individual privacy.

It is an exciting time of change, with the new Privacy Act 2020 coming into force on 1 December 2020.   The existing team is highly regarded, and is regularly engaged on highly topical, high profile issues (a recent example being assessment of privacy issues arising from contact tracing). 

The implications of the work you will be doing affect all New Zealanders, present and future. It is fascinating work that will stimulate an intellectually curious leader, who wants to continuously learn and progress their skills.

We are looking for a candidate with at least 5 years’ experience working in public policy, with demonstrated experience leading and inspiring teams.  We would expect that you will have an excellent knowledge of the New Zealand legislative and central government policy making processes, along with a keen interest in the interactions between privacy, technology and people.

The role involves managing an established team of six, and has a strong, collaborative culture.  This is a role where you will get to continue to evolve your own policy advisory skills, and requires a hands on approach, assisting with the mahi of the day where necessary.

What the role will require:

  • Management of the policy team, reporting to the Assistant Commissioner (Policy & Operations) and being an active member of the wider Senior Leadership team
  • Supporting the Assistant Commissioner with strategic business planning
  • Aligning the policy team’s work with the wider objectives of the Commissioner
  • Developing and implementing processes, to promote effective and efficient functioning of the policy team
  • Ensuring that the team is complying with relevant practices and standards
  • Ensuring that the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are consistently applied to all of the activities of the policy team
  • Internal and external stakeholder engagement
  • Responsibility for quality assurance of work undertaken by the policy team
  • Development and mentoring of the team
  • Provision of timely sound advice
  • Contribution to the development of new international instruments and guidelines, and work with international authorities to facilitate development of best practice.
