We have a fantastic opportunity for a policy adviser who really wants to make a difference for all New Zealanders and be at the forefront of setting policy in a continually evolving and increasingly high profile Kaupapa.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner is Aotearoa New Zealand’s privacy regulator – an Independent Crown Entity established to promote and protect individual privacy.  The organisation is passionate about helping people protect their privacy along with encouraging and sustaining a culture in Aotearoa where personal information is protected and respected wherever it exists.

We are looking for a motivated, intellectually curious adviser to join this supportive and highly collaborative organisation that has a strong focus on diversity and inclusion and is committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  You will become part of a well established team with a strong supportive culture, where team members bring their full selves to work.

In this role you will gain exposure to the rapidly growing privacy field and have a role to play in the implementation of the new Privacy Act 2020, which comes into force on 1 December 2020. Your work will carry significant implications for all New Zealanders.

The role will involve:

  • Colloborating with international privacy counterparts to share knowledge and foster cooperation
  • Reviewing and developing codes of practice under the Privacy Act
  • Making submissions to select committees, advising in an effective manner on existing, drafted or proposed government and non-government policies, that may affect privacy rights of the individual
  • Assisting with the development, implementation and review of privacy tools
  • Researching New Zealand and international privacy developments
  • Promoting public awareness and understanding of privacy law in New Zealand (including delivery of educational seminars and workshops)
  • Involvement in inquiries into privacy matters
  • Effectively developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships

The sucessful candidate requires:

  • Ideally at least two years of experience in a policy or related role
  • A curious, intellectual mind and excellent analytical skills
  • Fantastic verbal and written communication skills, with a real ability to communciate effecitvely wtih a wide range of audiences
  • A genuine interest in the way privacy interacts with policy and the law
  • An understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how to apply them to your work
  • A collaborative, team player approach
  • An agile and outcomes focus, with a willingness to reprioritise and manage a range of tasks
  • Prior privacy experience is not a requirment but will be highly valued
