Job Description

Senior Policy Adviser, Office of the Privacy Commissioner

Privacy is precious  -  help us protect it

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Policy Adviser who really wants to make a difference for all New Zealanders and be at the forefront of setting policy in a continually evolving and increasingly high profile Kaupapa.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is Aotearoa New Zealand’s privacy regulator – a small and independent crown entity established to protect individual privacy. The OPC is passionate about encouraging and sustaining a culture in Aotearoa where personal information is protected and respected.

You will be joining a supportive and highly collaborative organisation that has a strong focus on diversity and inclusion and is committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

We are looking for a senior adviser with a strong policy background, who has led policy projects and enjoys providing second opinion policy advice.  Ideally you will also have had experience with the legislative process, and have an interest in privacy issues.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a strong policy background and relevant experience (ideally 1+ years in a senior policy role or equivalent
  • Be able to provide sound advice about the privacy implications of draft or existing legislation and proposed government policy
  • Be able to advise and support the development and use of privacy tools such as a Privacy Impact Assessment
  • Be able to undertake research or the monitoring of privacy and related developments in New Zealand and overseas
  • Help undertake investigations and inquiries initiated by the Commissioner into any matter, law, practice or any technical development with privacy implications.

The team get to work on some pretty significant and complex issues – so need someone who is highly experienced in policy development, can think fast, use sound judgement, argue persuasively and deliver workable solutions that other people will want to use.

You will need to influence policies, laws and business practices as they are being made, so that the public can have confidence in the way government and business use their information. You’ll need to be able to see the bigger picture, and still focus in on the things that really matter to people in the real world. You’ll also need to be able to provide practical and clear advice, both in writing and in person.

You don’t need to be a privacy expert – the OPC can teach you everything you need to know about privacy and privacy law.

You will get to be part of a fun team and tackle some really interesting and high-profile policy projects – like the use of biometric data, rental sector practices, guidance for business, immigration and border management, organised crime, family welfare, social media and the tax system.

This is an exciting time to join the OPC with the Privacy Act 2020 that came into force on 1 December 2020. The Commission’s work is high profile and has a real impact (such as recent announcements to look into the practices and collection of information in the rental sector).

You will need to have the legal right to work in New Zealand to be considered for this role.

This is an excellent opportunity to take the next step in your career and take on a stimulating role, where you will be consistently learning and developing your skill set. The role is based in Wellington, with options for flexible working.
