A recent organisational review has brought our lawyers and paralegals into one branch, creating one of the largest in-house legal teams in the country.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

As a Legal Counsel at the Commission, you will be part of an expert Legal Services team with an impressive record of enforcement outcomes and defended appeals.

As a lawyer assigned to strategically significant Commission projects, you will be carrying out complex legal research and analysis of relevant NZ and international competition, regulatory, fair trading and/or consumer credit law; and analysing complex information to identify solutions to legal issues, with support from senior colleagues.

There is a wide range of legal work on offer at the Commission. Some of our lawyers are project managers on selected litigation projects, advising on litigation strategy, providing instruction to external legal counsel, drafting and reviewing Court documents and ensuring the Commission behaves as a model litigant. Others work with teams delivering key regulatory decisions for sectors that are vital to the New Zealand economy, advising on administrative law issues or drafting secondary legislation. While others provide legal support to our corporate and governance functions, advising on the Crown Entities, Privacy and Official Information Acts.

This is a permanent role that may be based in Wellington or Auckland.

He kōrero mōu | About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree in law with a sound academic transcript
  • Current New Zealand practising certificate
  • 0-3 years' Post Qualification Experience
  • Experience in competition, fair trading or consumer credit law, public law, and/or civil or criminal litigation, or advising on industry-specific regulation of utilities
  • Demonstrated drafting ability in preparation of Court pleadings, secondary legislation and/or legal advice
  • Sound legal research and analytical ability
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
