Job Description

We have a unique opportunity for an experienced and passionate individual to lead the delivery of legal services for a dynamic and evolving Council and the communities it serves and protects. 

The General Counsel provides legal advice and practical guidance to support the activities of the Council.  The role will have oversight of all legal matters, and an evolving legislative and regulatory environment will require your input and advice.

This role leads the Legal team with two direct reports, and you will sit within a team with supportive and empowering leadership.

Key responsibilities in this broad role include:

• Providing legal advice, LGOIMA advice and acting as solicitor for the Council including in the Environment Court
• Oversight and effective management of litigation matters
• Leading the Legal team and acting as Privacy Officer
• Assisting Council with risk management and its compliance programmes

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Laws with current NZLS practicing certificate
• At least five years post qualification experience
• Land law expertise, ideally with RMA experience
• Experience in a respected law practice or in-house experience
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with people throughout the organisation, and external advisers
