In your role as Senior Solicitor you will report to the General Manager – Risk and Assurance and work within the Risk and Assurance team. Requirements in your role may change with the needs of the organisation

Act as a Trusted Adviser • Acting as a trusted adviser to a wide variety of decision makers within Stats NZ.
• Providing timely quality legal service which is relevant to its recipients and is influential.
• Facilitating understanding and respect for the Crown’s responsibility to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
• Proactively advising on topics of importance to Stats NZ, including Health & Safety and Privacy.
• Assisting teams to identify and manage legal risk.
• Providing training and development to teams within Stats NZ
• Instructing external counsel

Core requirements • A relevant tertiary qualification in law and the ability to hold a New Zealand Law Society
Practising certificate • 5 – 7+ post qualification experience

• Good knowledge of the public sector in-house environment • A broad range of legal experience, ideally including a mix of commercial, regulatory,
public, administrative and/or privacy law experience. • An ability to provide proactive and solution-focused advice that is simple, pragmatic and
practical • A demonstrated ability to engage with and influence others across a range of discilines. • Excellent communication and relationship building skills. • Experience using everyday office software including a laptop/tablet, phone, Microsoft
suit of products e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, Intranet, online communications channels for meetings and chat.
• Written and oral communication skills suitable for a varied audience in a corporate setting.
• Competency or fluency in te reo Māori language or possess a willingness to develop knowledge and competence. (By 2040 Government aims to have 85% of its workers speaking te reo Māori).
• Understands Te Tiriti o Waitangi relevance to own role as a public servant and seeks opportunities to better meet the information needs of Māori. Supports initiatives to increase responsiveness to Māori.
Desirable • A broad knowledge of the machinery of government and working in the public sector
would be an advantage.
