Te whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Department of Internal Affairs (Te Tari) is seeking a visionary Chief Māori Advisor to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Māori capability and engagement within Te Tari. This is a unique opportunity to influence key strategies, guide cross-departmental initiatives, and ensure Māori perspectives are embedded in Te Tari’s work.

Mo te tūranga | About the role

As Chief Māori Advisor, you will provide expert advice directly to the Secretary for Internal Affairs and the Executive Leadership Team and will be responsible for leading the review and development of Te Tari’s Māori capability and operating model. This role has been designed specifically to advance Māori leadership and ensure Māori capability is joined up and cohesive across the Branches.

Working collaboratively with other Māori leadership roles and our wider community of stakeholders, you will uphold the mana of key work programmes including Whāinga Amorangi which supports Māori-Crown engagement, and the Māori Strategic Framework Te Aka Taiwhenua through He Waka Eke Noa, ensuring this mahi has support, visibility, and influence across Te Tari.

The Chief Māori Advisor is a 12-month fixed term position located in Wellington.

Salary range: $181,365 to $242,217 (midpoint $211,849).

Mōu ake | About you

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • Advanced proficiency in Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.
  • In-depth understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its current developments.
  • Proven experience working with Māori communities, whānau, hapū and iwi.
  • Understanding of organisational systems and the ability to navigate large, complex environments, with a focus on delivering more responsive and effective services for Māori.
  • Ability to think critically, make strategic decisions, and provide sound analysis in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly developed influencing and relationship-building skills, particularly in a cross-agency and Māori community context.
