Legal Adviser

About Broadcasting Standards Authority | Te Mana Whanonga Kaipāho

The Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) is an independent crown entity that upholds the standards of broadcasting in New Zealand. We are looking for a legal adviser to join our legal team.   You can learn more about the BSA at www.bsa.govt.nz

About the role

In this role, you will case manage complaints about breaches of broadcasting standards, liaising with complainants and broadcasters, analysing and drafting decisions and presenting your recommendations to the Authority. You will also work on a range of projects relating to regulatory reform, broadcasting standards matters and the provision of guidelines and training to broadcasters. You will work alongside a small and inclusive team and get to be part of the dynamic and evolving media environment.

About you

This role would ideally suit a recent graduate, or you may be more experienced and already working in-house or be considering a move out of private practice. Whatever your experience level, you will have an appreciation for the attitudes and expectations of Aotearoa's diverse, liberal democracy.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Laws qualification, and a current New Zealand practising certificate (or be eligible to obtain one)
  • Have an interest in and/or some experience in media, journalism, broadcasting, and/or human rights
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills, a commitment to excellence, and attention to detail
  • Be enthusiastic and have a proven ability to communicate well with a cross-section of society

Diversity and inclusion

The BSA is committed to a workplace where everyone feels valued. Diversity and inclusion are essential to success, and diversity of thought and experience leads to better decision-making and innovation.

In all we do, we are committed to supporting and reflecting the principles in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and otherwise respecting te ao Māori and the rights and interests of Māori as tangata whenua.

At the BSA we value transferable skills, lived experiences – maybe from paid or unpaid work (including caring, voluntary, community, and mahi aroha) – and encourage people from all backgrounds to apply.

Working at BSA

The salary range for the Legal Adviser position is $66,334 - $90,100 (plus 3% KiwiSaver).

BSA also offers 4 weeks annual leave, additional ‘BSA days’ leave during the summer holidays, a basic Sky package and Listener subscription and will consider flexible working arrangements, including compressed hours and hybrid working.
