Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

Age Concern Auckland is seeking to appoint a Māori Advisor (on a part time basis) to join our team and evolve our understanding and knowledge of te ao Māori.

You will play a key role in ensuring our services and programs are culturally relevant, accessible, and effective for Kaumātua and their whanau. This role involves working closely with Māori communities, understanding their needs, and developing initiatives that promote their well-being and active participation.  You will be working across the organisation to build strong relationships with Iwi, Hapū and Hapori Māori that will enable us to be more effective in our mahi.    Building strong relationships with Māori health providers and relevant government agencies will also be important.

You will be the kaitiaki and lead cultural advisor for Age Concern Auckland, playing a key role in understanding our relationship to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and giving effect to it.  Underpinning this work, you will be responsible for developing a multi-year strategic programme, including the development of a Te Ao Māori framework, that will weave tikanga and Māori practices into strategic systems and processes.

Working closely with our CEO, Board and our Kaimahi, you will also drive initiatives that will enhance cultural and engagement capability across the organisation.

Mō mātou | About Us

Ko koe tēnei | About you

You will be able to be your authentic self, where your mātauranga is valued and appreciated, and you will have the autonomy and scope to create real impact, as well as be able to improve and create new policies and weave in these into everyday practice.

Ideally, you will bring with you:

  • Lived experience in teaching, facilitating and capability building in relation to Māori perspectives.

  • Confidence in speaking te reo Māori and be comfortable supporting any initiatives to grow staff confidence in speaking and understanding tikanga and kawa.
  • Confidence with the application and interpretation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a work setting.
  • Experience reviewing existing practices and processes and making recommendations to adapt these to ensure a more successful work environment for Maori.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, and in particular with Iwi, Hapū and Whānau.
