Are you a seasoned legal professional with commercial law experience seeking a community-focused in-house role? Do you enjoy tackling complex legal questions and working within a supportive and tight-knit team?

Our client is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join their high-performing legal team on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a unique opportunity to provide expert legal advice and guidance on a wide range of challenging issues, including contract and construction matters, and to contribute to the achievement of meaningful community outcomes.

As Senior Legal Counsel you will support the General Counsel and the wider legal team across a broad variety of matters. You will draft, review and advise on contracts and other agreements; advise on property, construction, and business issues; manage external body investigations and litigation; advise on legislative and regulatory issues; assess and manage legal risk; and more. In addition, you will provide advice and assistance to the organisation’s Chief Executive, Senior Leadership Team, and managers, while contributing to the realisation of the organisation’s strategic priorities.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • A Bachelor of Laws and current practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one).
  • 5+ years’ PQE, with a strong background in commercial, property or construction law. Experience across one or more of the following areas is also beneficial: resource management; planning; public law; and regulatory issues.
  • A strong understanding of the in-house public sector environment (prior experience working in the public sector is a plus).
  • The confidence and ability to work autonomously and to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A growth mindset, strong problem-solving and relationship-building skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, pragmatic advice.
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Ao Māori perspectives, statutory obligations to Māori / mana whenua, and the ability to apply this knowledge within the role.
