The JR McKenzie Trust is a philanthropic family trust dedicated to creating a socially just and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand. Established in 1940, the Trust focuses on advancing equity through transformational change and system-focused solutions, with a strategic priority to support Māori, Pacific Peoples, children, young people and whānau, and communities at risk of exclusion. The Trust distributes funds through various approaches to align with its vision:

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most respected philanthropic organisations. We are seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Executive to champion the Trust’s vision, values, and identity, and to advance its legacy of bold, courageous support for communities facing systemic disadvantage.
As a leader who is grounded in humility, empathy, and respect, you will play a pivotal role in shaping strategy, fostering high-trust relationships, and leading enduring change.

You will be a trusted thought leader with a proven track record in philanthropy and a deep commitment to advancing equity and social justice. You will possess strong organisational leadership skills, a passion for systemic change, and the ability to inspire and empower teams to achieve meaningful outcomes.
To be successful in this role you will bring:
- Organisational Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading an organisation including oversight of governance, HR, finance, planning, and policies.
- Thought Leadership: A deep understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand’s philanthropic landscape, including international trends and the evolving nature of the sector.
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Demonstrated commitment to upholding Te Tiriti, with an ability to engage effectively with Māori communities at a grassroots level.
- High-Trust Relationship Building: Proven leadership in relational grant making, building high-trust, authentic relationships with social change leaders in priority communities.
- Evidence-Informed Practice: A mindset of continuous improvement, with a strong focus on research, evaluation, and evidence to inform decision-making.
- People Management: Proven ability to lead and nurture a high-performing, values-driven team. Skilled in fostering collaboration and a culture of trust and accountability.
- Governance Experience: Experience working with a board and supporting effective governance rhythms and decision-making processes.
