They are seeking an experienced and strategic communications professional to lead their communications and engagement function. This is a key leadership role, offering the opportunity to influence how Council connects with its communities and delivers meaningful engagement that makes a difference.
From roading to water, reserves to resource management, housing to heritage – Waitaki District Council’s responsibilities are broad and impactful. The Strategic Communications & Engagement Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the Council communicates clearly, consistently and credibly across all channels.
The Opportunity
You will be responsible for leading a team that develops and implements Council-wide communications and engagement strategies, manages public relations and media, safeguarding brand reputation, and strengthening internal and external communication practices.
Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement & Experience, this position also leads a skilled communications team and contributes to the strategic direction of the directorate. It’s an opportunity to work closely with elected members, senior leaders, and stakeholders to build trust and foster strong relationships across the district.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of integrated communication and engagement strategies.
- Manage Council’s public relations, media responses, and brand reputation.
- Guide internal communication efforts to enhance organisational cohesion.
- Provide expert advice to senior leaders and elected members.
- Lead a diverse team (circa 10-12 people), fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Build and maintain strong community and stakeholder relationships.
About You
You will bring:
- Proven experience in working in corporate communications within public sector, including working in complex or politically sensitive environments.
- A sound understanding of community engagement principles.
- Strong strategic thinking, political awareness, and influencing skills.
- People management experience.
- A collaborative, people-focused leadership style that empowers teams and encourages innovation.
