Our client is an energy company with a strong New Zealand brand and nationwide coverage. It is part of an international business with offices in Asia Pacific and North America. Located in their stylish Wellington CBD head office, you will be part of a high-functioning legal team with interesting work and exciting career opportunities. 

About the role

As a Legal Counsel with a focus on regulatory matters, you will monitor regulatory reform and will lead the implementation of any changes across the business.

You will provide legal advice in relation to legislation including the Fuel Industry Act, Commerce Act, and Privacy Act and will provide legal support for managing any risks and customer complaints, including liaising with the relevant regulators.

You will also be involved with advocacy, including reviewing and assisting with submissions, and other external reporting.

This position is to provide coverage for parental leave from early September 2024 to end October 2025.

About you

What you will offer:

  • Around 3-6 years’ PQE and currently admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.
  • Generalist experience, ideally within a regulatory or public law role
  • Strong understanding of the legislative process and the ability to lead implementation of change in a commercial environment
  • Demonstrated experience of adding value for internal customers through the provision of pragmatic advice, ongoing process improvement, and creation of self-help tools
  • Sound commercial judgement, with the ability to apply your understanding of the business strategy and operating environment.
