Our client is an energy company with a strong New Zealand brand and nationwide coverage. It is part of an international business with offices in Asia Pacific and North America. About the role

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide leadership and deliver specialist legal advice, which is commercial, clear, pragmatic and fit for purpose, to manage risks across the business; this may include legal, commercial, financial, regulatory (including Environment, Health & Safety) and reputational risks.

With a focus on the downstream energy supply chain, you will lead commercial dealings and review, draft and negotiate a wide variety of arrangements relating to joint ventures, transactions, liquids storage, construction, property and supplier services.

As this is a senior leadership role within the team, you will work closely with the Associate General Counsel and stand in for them as needed. You will also provide mentoring and training for team members and build knowledge and capability across the business and effectively manage external legal services.

About you

What you will offer:

  • Around 7-10 years’ PQE and currently admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.
  • Experience in a senior legal role, providing specialist legal advice and guiding and mentoring a team to successful outcomes.
  • Generalist experience, which may include working across commercial, competition, company, energy, electricity, shipping and property law.
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating commercial arrangements and operating in a fast-paced, high-volume work environment.
  • The ability to build strong relationships across the business and communicate legal advice to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Sound commercial judgement, with the ability to apply your understanding of the business strategy and operating environment.
